Manchester United’s attempts to sign Wout Weghorst are being held up by Besiktas’ attempts to sign a replacement.
United want to bring the 30-year-old in on loan during the January transfer window, but that involves Besiktas cancelling the loan agreement they have with Burnley for the Netherlands forward.
The Clarets don’t have a recall option in the loan deal struck in the summer and Weghorst is due to spend the entire season with Besiktas, who also have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

But Weghorst wants to make the move to United to link up with his countryman Erik ten Hag and the three clubs have been in talk to facilitate a change in January.
United and Besiktas are now close to reaching an agreement to terminate the loan for a fee of around £2.5m, which would see Weghorst return to Burnley and then be loaned to United, with a cut-price deal in place between the two English clubs.
Besiktas are reluctant to sign it off until they have a replacement signed, however. They want to sign Vincent Aboubakar from Al Nassr, after the Cameroon forward was made available following Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to the Saudi Arabian club.
But Aboubakar is currently demanding the same salary he was on at Al Nassr, which is a stumbling block for cash-strapped Besiktas.
United would need to register Weghorst by midday on Friday if they want him to be involved in Saturday’s lunchtime derby against Manchester City.
The forward appeared to wave goodbye to the Besiktas fans after scoring against Kasimpasa on Saturday, but he returned to training with the Istanbul club on Tuesday.
