Manchester United chief 'stunned' by Michael Edwards decision as transfer master departs Liverpool

The man who helped steer Liverpool through it's most successful period in the last 30 years is now wanted by some of the top clubs in Europe, but it would appear the Reds' fiercest rivals are not one of them.

Michael Edwards presided over a series of significant Liverpool signings and exits during a five and a half year reign as Sporting Director that yielded the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup and World Club Championship.

The 43-year-old has officially stepped down from his role this month in order to take a break from football but has been subject to speculation of interest from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and more recently Chelsea. However, according to a report in the Daily Mirror, an unnamed Manchester United executive has been left 'stunned' by the Red Devils for not doing everything in their power to try and bring Edwards to Old Trafford.

United have just completed their worst ever Premier League season, finishing in sixth, 35 points behind title-winners Manchester City and 34 adrift of Liverpool. The club is attempting to overhaul its sporting structure in a bid to return to their former dominance of the 90s and 00s, but the appointment of interim boss Ralf Rangnick as a consultant has already fallen through, with the German ditching the role to become coach of the Austrian national team instead.

Any move for Edwards would mean the removal of United's current Sporting Director John Murtough, but he has only been in the job 15 months and is already under pressure to deliver the goods this summer, even though the club cannot offer the incentive of Champions League football next season. There is apparent reluctance for United to move Murtough on so quickly, but that didn't stopped the unnamed Red Devils executive from reportedly being left 'flabbergasted' by a lack of desire to bring in Edwards.

A more serious move could be that of Chelsea however, with incoming owner Todd Boehly having already gone on record to express his thoughts about how Liverpool have done their business under the guise of Edwards.

Speaking at a venture capital event, Boehly said: "If you look at the models that are very successful, Liverpool is a great model. They generate a couple of hundred million more revenue than Chelsea and they generate earnings."
