Manchester United captain Harry Maguire blames the rain for yellow card vs Burnley

Harry Maguire blamed the wind for contributing to his controversial yellow card at Turf Moor, but said Manchester United couldn't use the conditions as an excuse for their draw with Burnley.

The match was played in heavy rain throughout in East Lancashire and the wind added to the difficulties in the second half, but the United skipper refused to use the conditions as a reason for dropping two points.

United played well in the first 45 minutes and deservedly lead through Paul Pogba's goal. But Jay Rodriguez equalised just after the break and Maguire was then booked for fouling the same player when the home fans wanted him sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

Maguire said the rain had played a part in the mistake that led to that incident, but the conditions weren't the reason why United lost control of the game in the second half.

"The wind picked up and rain was straight into our faces in the second half so it was tough to get the flight of the ball," he told MUTV.

"For my yellow card we both misjudged it. It was tough conditions but we showed in the first half we can get the ball down and play and create chances so it’s no excuse to look at the conditions because we played really well in the first half and the game should be won."

United created enough chances to win the game in the first half but defended poorly for the equaliser and then struggled to reimpose themselves on the contest.

"The lads in there are really disappointed, we’ve done enough to win the match," said Maguire.

"We’ve created enough chances to win the match in the first half alone. It’s two points dropped, we demand to win these matches. We’ve got another big game on Saturday to prove ourselves and pick ourselves up.

"When you create that amount of chances you’ve got to be clinical and score the second goal, we know how important the second goal is. It’s similar to Friday when we created numerous chances. Decisions went against us, especially the second goal which is never a foul.

"The second half comes and we know it’s not going to be easy and there will be a spell when we have to dig in and they’re going to have a little bit of pressure. That moment when the pressure comes they manage to score and we’ve got to do better in those moments."
