Manchester United and Crystal Palace fined by FA for mass brawl that saw Casemiro sent off

Manchester United and Crystal Palace have both been fined £55,000 for a mass confrontation involving both sets of players during their Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

The hosts had been 2-0 up and cruising towards another victory on home soil after goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, but the incident changed the feel of the match.

Jeffrey Schlupp shoved United winger Antony out of play and almost every player on the pitch joined the melee, with Casemiro then sent off for grabbing Will Hughes’ neck after a VAR review.

United accepted the that they had failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and refrained from provocative behaviour but Palace had denied the charge.

“An independent Regulatory Commission subsequently found the charge against Crystal Palace proven and imposed both of the clubs’ fines,” the FA said.

Speaking after the match, Erik ten Hag voiced his frustration over the decision to send Casemiro off as he insisted his players had to “stick together”.

“Casemiro is protecting our player, and protecting the player [Hughes], holding him back,” Ten Hag said.

“If Casemiro should have been sent off, many more players should have been sent off.

“We get some warnings about our team reacting like this. You have to do it, you have to protect each other, but we want to keep our standards and values at Man Utd. You can’t cross lines, but you have to stick together. We have to stand up for each other.”
