Manchester United aiming to negotiate five new contracts

Manchester United are aiming to consolidate their progress under Erik ten Hag by finalising key contract renewals this year.

United have already opened discussions with David de Gea, who is approaching the final five months of his deal, and Marcus Rashford will be offered an improved deal.

Rashford, 25, has scored 16 goals already this season after a dire 2021-22 campaign when it emerged he was open to leaving the club after he did not start the Manchester derby in March last year.

The England international's agent and brother, Dwaine Maynard, met Paris Saint-Germain officials in August, a rendezvous that sources close to Rashford at the time felt was ill-advised.

PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi reiterated the club's interest in Rashford last month and, coupled with Rashford's prolific form, has strengthened his negotiation position.

Rashford has scored eight goals in the last seven games and registered in United's last nine matches at Old Trafford. His winner against Manchester City on Saturday meant became the first United player to score in seven successive games since Cristiano Ronaldo.

United manager Erik ten Hag is also eager for Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred to be tied down on longer deals. Dalot had started in all but one United match prior to the World Cup while Shaw has impressively recovered from a galling start to the season to flourish at centre back alongside Raphael Varane.

Fred, who turns 30 in March, started in the home wins over Tottenham and City, and his impacts off the bench have been noted by Ten Hag.

United triggered the one-year extensions in the contracts of Rashford, Shaw, Dalot and Fred last month. They have the option of an additional year on De Gea's deal but could finalise new terms before his current contract expires on June 30.

Discussions about renewals were halted after the summer transfer window and are expected to commence shortly. United have effectively concluded their business this month, having signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley on Friday.
