Manchester neighbourhood named one of the 'coolest' in the UK

One of Manchester's most popular neighbourhoods has been named the second 'coolest' in Britain by a national publication - and it's not the first time it has been bestowed the honour.

You may have already guessed it, but Ancoats has been named in a round-up of the 15 coolest neighbourhoods in Britain by The Telegraph. Coming in second place, it was pipped to the post by Walthamstow in east London.

Earlier this year, the hip Manchester district found itself in a list of the world's coolest places. Cutting Room Square in Ancoats was named as of of the 33 Coolest Streets in the World according to Time Out Magazine.

Also representing the North, Liverpool's Baltic Triangle, Ouseburn in Newcastle, and Meanwood in Leeds all made the cut, with Sheffield's Kelham Island and Stockbridge in Edinburgh also receiving a nod and glowing write-up.

In its write-up of Manchester, The Telegraph gave a whistle-stop tour of the neighbourhood, stopping off to acknowledged its textile roots and adopted moniker of “Little Italy” - a reference to a surge in Italian immigration at the turn of the 20th Century. Fast forward to more recent times, and the publication notes Ancoats emergence as "the next major gentrification area" anchored by Cutting Room Square - a bustling meeting place and drinking hole.

Giving its readers some tips as to where to head, The Telegraph gave nods to Elnecot, as somewhere "where cool industrial décor meets a warm, friendly vibe, is a fine brunch and Sunday roast spot", as well as Rudy's, which as we all know is famed for its Neapolitan pizzas.

Portuguese eatery Canto also gets a shout out, as does Café Cotton at Hallé St Peter’s, and 'Little Vietnam', which it refers to as "the area between Cutting Room Square and New Islington, [which] is known for its pho noodle outlets".

In terms of shopping, the publication added: "Newly minted districts usually get to retail last. For now, Ancoats is best for tattoos, Tooth and Talon; beard-tidying, Jersey Street Social Club; and the mini-market reinvention that is the General Store on Blossom Street." The Copper and Blossom Boudoir also got a mention as somewhere to rest your head should you be staying overnight and was described as having "five dimly lit, lavishly fixtured, blinged-up suites sleeping two to 14 people".

Of course, this is not the first time the Manchester neighbourhood has been described as one of the world's 'coolest'. In 2018 it reached 13th position in Time Out's list of trendy hotspots - beating Berlin and Tokyo. Though last year it dropped to 20th position, but still polled ahead of Kempton in Brighton and Ouseburn in Newcastle.

In this year's list of the 33 Coolest Streets in the World, by the same publication, Cutting Room Square came in at 21, joining the likes of Auckland, New Zealand, Copenhagen in Denmark, Boston, Miami and San Francisco in America, and Berlin in Germany. Ancoats made the cut thanks to its mix of culture, dining and "rich history" - while the large open-air dining space at the heart of the square was also praised by the guide.
