Manchester has been named as one of the best places to visit in the UK in 2023 by Time Out. Ahead of the New Year, and as travellers make plans for the year ahead, the media company has revealed its top 15 places to visit.
Topping the list for a day trip or longer stay is Eastbourne, which is earmarked as a rising artistic and cultural hub. Taking second place is Birmingham, which Time Out notes for its “most underrated food scene in the UK” and the return of the Ashes in June next year as some of the main reasons to visit.
The Welsh town of Cardigan lands in third and is described as the "most underrated" spot in West Wales, while Manchester comes in forth. The guide notes that next year will see the reopening of Manchester Museum in February and Factory International's grand launch in June - both cited as major reasons for people to visit the city.

Huw Oliver, Time Out’s UK Editor said; “Rather than the usual hotspots, we want to highlight places, many of which are ludicrously underrated, which people don’t automatically think to go to but which offer so much. In all of the places on the list, you will find interesting things to see and do, eat and drink during the day and night, a friendly welcome and a community spirit which enables you to connect with locals and really get to know a place.
"We recommend that you definitely put one or more of these destinations on your list for a day trip or overnight break next year." To come up with the list, Time Out’s network of local editors selected and ranked the destinations based on their current food, drink and arts scene.
The ranking was also based on whether there are also lots of new things to get excited about in the coming year in the chosen places such as new hotels, restaurants, museums or events to put on people’s calendars for 2023. Other entries on the Best Places to Visit in the UK 2023 list include London at number eight, Scotland’s capital Edinburgh at number nine, and Cheshire in fifteenth position.
As part of the new guide, Time Out also suggests some of the best places to visit for a 'perfect' day out in Manchester. It's list includes pitstops in the city's Northern Quarter including brunch spot Ezra & Gil as well as the Manchester Craft and Design Centre, and a film and pizza at Home over on First Street.
In summer, Manchester was ranked the 13th best city in the world by Time Out and in September, the publication named a Manchester street one of the 'coolest in the world', alongside Miami Beach and Berlin. The Cutting Room Square in Ancoats featured in a list of more than 20 buzzy cities, which included Auckland, Copenhagen and Boston.
The up-and-coming district of Ancoats made the cut due to its mix of culture, dining and "rich history" - while the large open-air dining space at the heart of the square was also praised by the guide. Only a few weeks ago, Manchester was also revealed as one of the top places for a Christmas getaway in the UK.
Releasing its final instalment of its Travel Index for 2022, Tripadvisor revealed it's list of top 10 destinations for a break in the UK, with Manchester taking sixth position.
