Manchester City will take a narrow lead to the Bernabeu for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final after beating Real Madrid 4-3 in a thriller on Tuesday night.
Here’s how Pep Guardiola’s side rated at the Etihad...
Ederson 5
Some questionable use of his feet got City in trouble. Not his usual assured self, which led to a sense of unease at the back.
John Stones 4
The experiment did not work. Whether it was down to his fitness or lack of suitability to the right back role, Real looked to target City down his side.
Ruben Dias 6
Not as dominant as we’ve come to expect. Dragged out of position by Benzema dropping off and part of an uncertain City defence.
Aymeric Laporte 6
Had some uncomfortable moments as Real exposed gaps either side of him. He was not alone – but Real managed to get beyond him too often. Handball gave Real a late penalty.
Oleksandr Zinchenko 7
Squeezed Real with his runs forward. Notable Real tried to attack down the opposite side for the most part.
Rodri 6
Overrun at times when Real burst forward. Much more effective when City were in possession, helping to push the opposition deeper and deeper into retreat.
Kevin de Bruyne 9
Some absolutely vintage football from him as City threatened to run away with it early on. Opened the scoring and then set up Jesus for the second. Foden should have taken advantage of another opening he created, all before half time.
Bernardo Silva 8
Picked up spaces that dragged Real around the pitch and further opened them up with his darting movement. No better demonstrated than by his wonderful goal.
Riyad Mahrez 7
Blew two golden chances to extend City’s lead and perhaps kill off Real. Guardiola was visibly frustrated, but at the same time, he posed such a threat with his pace.
Phil Foden 9
Scored one and might have had two more. Some absolutely sumptuous touches had Real players chasing shadows. Pure class.
Gabriel Jesus 8
Took his goal brilliantly and caused Real so many problems with his movement and chasing off the ball.
Substitutes
Fernandinho (Stones, 36) 5
Rolled the years back with a vintage burst and cross to set up Foden’s goal – but beaten so easily by Vinicius as Real immediately hit back and made to look his age as he struggled to keep pace with the lightning winger. To be fair, so would anyone.
Raheem Sterling (Jesus, 83)
Couldn’t turn in late chance.
