Manchester City get easy win in Continental Cup quarter-final at Bristol City

Manchester City romped to a 6-0 win over Bristol City in the Women’s League Cup quarter-final at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening.

The Women’s Super League side showed their class from the very first minute with two early chances from Laia Aleixandri and Filippa Angeldahl.

It took Hayley Raso just eight minutes to break the deadline and she doubled her and City’s tally just four minutes later after assists from Alex Greenwood and Angeldahl, respectively.

Both strikes were with her right foot as she found the left and then the right bottom corner of the goal and it was no surprise after the way they had started the game.

The visitor’s top scorer, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw added to the scoresheet with half an hour played after some good work from Lauren Hemp.

The Jamaican returned the favour twice in the 35th and 66th minutes - Man City’s fourth and sixth goals - and either side of Mary Fowler, whose effort was her fourth in the competition.

In a half where the hosts had no shots at all and the Citizens had 11 with eight on target, the five-goal deficit was not a surprise to anyone at half-time.

It never looked like anything other than a Man City win was on the cards but Bristol boss Lauren Smith will be disappointed that her Championship team weren’t able to provide a stronger defence to the relentless attacks of Gareth Taylor’s team.

More worrying for the home manager will be the fact that the goals were all scored from the box with her defensive line struggling to protect goalkeeper Olivia Smith, who had the busiest night of anyone on the pitch.
