Manchester becomes first UK city to charge tourists for visiting

Tourists to Manchester staying overnight can expect to pay a new tourist tax from 1 April.

Visitors to the northwestern city who stay in a city centre hotel or holiday apartment will be charged £1 per night, per room, as part of a new scheme officials hope will raise £3m per year.
