Man who firebombed migrant centre before killing himself 'was suspected paedo'

A man who firebombed a migrant centre before killing himself was a suspected paedophile, according to a report.

The 66-year-old man launched three home-made explosives the Border Force immigration centre in Dover on Sunday.

Two people inside the centre were hurt during the strike, however they only suffered minor injuries.

The attacker then reportedly told coach drivers transporting migrants "Do you know what you're doing? Your children should be raped and killed!" before driving to a petrol station and taking his own life.

Police have now raided his High Wycombe home after he drove more than 100 miles to firebomb the centre, carrying out a "recce" the night before, according to the Mail Online.

A source said the 66-year-old was a suspected paedophile who previously threatened to kill himself as he was questioned by police, reports claim.

The source told The Telegraph that the bomber was previously investigated for child sex offences, although it is unclear if he was ever charged.

Local Gary Smith, 31, claimed the suspect was laughing as he flung the bombs from a white Seat four-wheel drive vehicle.

He said: “I was walking over a nearby bridge and I could see him throwing the bombs. They were making loud bangs. I think he threw about four or five.

"He was just laughing while he was doing it. It was crazy. I can't believe what happened afterwards too at the petrol station. I feel sick."

Another witness described the incendiary devices hitting the processing centre as sounding like "end of year fireworks".

The lorry driver, who gave his name as Francisco, came across the scene as he ran back to his truck. He said he started to run after hearing loud bangs similar to fireworks.

Francisco added: “There were loud bangs - about eight of them. It was like end of year fireworks. I ran back to the petrol station to see what was going on. It seems the bangs were coming from above the cliff.

“I got to the petrol station at the same time as police. It wasn’t a nice sight. I can’t believe why someone would do that. I feel sorry for the man.

Police are investigating whether the attacker had far-right links (PA)

"There were no customers in the car park at the time thankfully. Just the people in the shop.”

It is not yet clear why the attacker targeted the migrant centre, although police are investigating whether he had far-right links.

Lucy Moreton, spokesperson for the Union for Borders, Immigration & Customs, said it was a "really frightening" time for staff working with migrants.

She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "There's been a lot of drones flying over the site in the last 24 hours.

"There's a lot of tensions on the site. The migrants are very keen to be moving, to be moved on, to get their freedom back.

"Staff face, on a daily basis, sitdown protests."
