Man who crashed car in Harpurhey found with gun and machete when searched by police

A man involved in a smash in Harpurhey on Thursday evening was later found with a gun and machete when searched. Officers cornered the man along Rochdale Road, by the gates to Queen's Park, in the north Manchester town.

The male was arrested after failing to provide a breath sample at the scene. He was arrested and his silver VW was searched by officers.

They found a gun - which cops later discovered to be blank firing - in his jacket. They then searched his vehicle, where they discovered a machete on the passenger side, a slingshot and ball bearings.

Pictures from the scene show the man being arrested by officers. His car was seized, along with the items found, for further enquiries to be carried out.

The gun recovered from the vehicle (ASP)

An update was shared by GMP's Traffic page on Thursday evening. It read: "Rochdale Rd, Harpurhey. Following an RTC, male was arrested for failing to provide a breath sample.

"He was found to have this (blank firing) gun in his jacket. A search of his vehicle found a machete, slingshot & ball bearings. Vehicle & items seized for further enquiries."

It was just metres away from this that police attended another non-related incident on Thursday evening. They erected a cordon at Tavistock Square, off Grangewood Drive, amid unconfirmed reports of a 'fight'.
