Man Utd to spark transfer merry-go-round as David de Gea contract delay explained

Manchester United could be set to trigger a three-way transfer domino effect once questions over David de Gea ’s future end.

The Spanish goalkeeper sees his contract with the Red Devils expire next month and as it stands, he would be leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer. Reports had previously suggested that De Gea was close to penning fresh terms that would see his current wage packet reduced.

That would see the former Atletico Madrid man extend his United career into a 13th campaign. He is fresh off the back of a season where he claimed the Premier League Golden Glove for the second time in his career.

Despite suggestions that he would be staying, an announcement from the club has not been forthcoming. Talking about the current situation after his side’s final day win over Fulham, boss Erik ten Hag said: “I have to repeat, last game, last week, every time, we want him to stay, he wants to stay, we will find each other.”

According to Mail Online, De Gea has indeed agreed a fresh deal at Old Trafford but the new contract is yet to be rubber-stamped by club officials. Once it receives the thumbs-up then that will potentially trigger a number of moves.

The first of those will be Dean Henderson’s £20m permanent switch to Nottingham Forest following his loan spell in the East Midlands. The Red Devils could also move to bolster their own goalkeeping options.

United have been linked to a number of stoppers ahead of the summer transfer window including Porto star Diogo Costa. One man who could also be an option is Brentford’s David Raya.

De Gea’s countryman has just one year remaining on his contract with the West London outfit. Bees boss Thomas Frank has already admitted that he could be sold but only if the club’s asking price of £40m is met.

Speaking after his side’s victory over champions Manchester City on the final day of the season, he said: “I think we only have one player for sale. That’s the one that’s been talked about a lot, David. He costs £40m, I think I said.”

The Dane added: “We are a selling club. I don’t think that’s a secret. But they need to be crazy high amounts for the players for anyone to leave. I’m pretty sure that everyone, including myself, is very happy here at Brentford.”

Raya played every minute for Brentford in the Premier League this season, keeping 12 clean sheets. Tottenham have also been linked with a move for the 27-year-old as they aim to find a successor for Hugo Lloris.
