Nemanja Matic has 'officially informed' Manchester United that he plans to leave the club in the summer.
The experienced midfielder has been surplus to requirements this season with Scott McTominay and Fred predominantly occupying the middle of the park under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now Ralf Rangnick.
United's issues in the midfield have been well documented but Matic has barely had a look in as the Red Devils have identified that area as a priority in the upcoming transfer window.
A major rebuild is expected under Erik ten Hag, who has verbally accepted a deal to become the next permanent manager, with Man United set for several casualties under the Ajax boss' stewardship.
And it appears Matic could be the first name heading out the exit door as he has told United his plans to leave the club in the upcoming transfer window, according to journalist Jonathan Shrager. Matic, who has a year left on his current contract, has 'officially informed' United of his wish to seek a move away from Old Trafford, something which the club are willing to grant.
It comes as no surprise after Matic freely discussed the mood within the dressing room admitting the "atmosphere is not fantastic" and warning it will only deteriorate if United finish outside of the top four.
The Serb told talkSPORT: "The atmosphere? It depends on the results. Of course, when you have good results the atmosphere is much better and everyone is happy.

"As you know, we are not in the best position in the league and the atmosphere is not fantastic but we have to stay positive and believe until the end because we want to finish in that top-four. The atmosphere in our dressing room will depend on that. If we finish top-four then it will be good for us, everyone will be… I cannot say happy, but satisfied. If we don't make that, it will be a very sad dressing room."
Matic offered a bleak glimpse of life behind the scenes at Carrington but insists he and the United squad are still firmly behind Rangnick ahead of the all-important Premier League run-in.
He added: "He is trying his best and we are trying to follow his ideas. Only at the end of the season, when we see the table and see where we are, then we can speak more about this. At the moment, what I can say is that Ralf and his staff, and us as players, are doing our best."
