Man Utd reveal 2022/23 home shirt - but new retro design will set fans back £100

Manchester United have released their new kit in a tribute to their first-ever shirt in the Premier League back in 1992/93, donned by the likes of Eric Cantona, Gary Pallister and Mark Hughes.

However, the shirt will set fans back by £100 if they want to rock up at Old Trafford with the freshest fashion. To earmark a new era at the club with Erik ten Hag, Adidas have gone retro.

The sportswear giants have often looked at yesteryear for their inspirations with their away kit last season particularly catching the eye. And they have done so once again to mark the 30th anniversary of United's first-ever kit in the Premier League.

On their website, United said: "Turned up or pressed down, the humble polo collar has played a starring role in many of Manchester United's biggest moments. Making a comeback on this adidas home authentic jersey, it joins a shield-style badge and engineered pinstripe graphic to produce an eye-catching look.

"Cooling HEAT.RDY and lightweight details support football worthy of the Old Trafford turf. Made with 100% recycled materials, this product represents just one of our solutions to help end plastic waste."

United have released the new shirt ahead of their tour to Australia and Thailand where they are hoping for a major commercial boom as they continue their pre-season preparations. The squad jet off Friday morning and will face Liverpool at the Rajamangala Stadium on Tuesday.

That will be when the Red Devils will first model the new strip while an upcoming friendly against Melbourne Victory on Friday will also commence.

Design director at Adidas Inigo Turner said: “The polo collar is synonymous with Manchester United. Turned up or folded down, it has played a starring role in many of the club’s biggest moments.

“With such a rich history, we wanted to pay homage to some of the club’s most legendary kits and players, whilst capturing the essence of home brought into the present day with a new perspective on the strong visual identity and patterns that run through the DNA of the club.”

The design is a throwback to United's first campaign in the Premier League which also donned a similar collar and badge size. In the augural year of the competition, the Red Devils finished victorious in a rousing season that saw them 10 points ahead of second-placed Aston Villa.

Sir Alex Ferguson was at the helm, who coached a number of superstars at the time including Paul Ince, Ryan Giggs and Peter Schmeichel. Cantona, who was signed from Leeds United that season, also began his historic stint at the club in the same kiy wearing the famous No. 7 shirt.

The current holder of that number, though, might not be present for its grand revealing in Thailand next week after Cristiano Ronaldo was excused of going on tour with the club. There is widespread reports that the 37-year-old wants to leave United, which would free up the No. 7 top.
