Man Utd news: David de Gea makes contract decision as Red Devils eye record bid

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is hoping to end his first season at Old Trafford on a high note.

Ten Hag has already guided United to victory in the Carabao Cup and could add another trophy to his collection, with an FA Cup final clash against neighbours Manchester City on the horizon. United are also hoping to qualify for next season's edition of the Champions League, although their top four spot is under significant pressure.

Following two consecutive losses to Brighton and West Ham, United are now just one point above Liverpool and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they take on Wolves on Saturday. With that in mind, here are the latest headlines from around the club.

Carrick tipped as future Man Utd boss

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is "100 per cent sure" Michael Carrick will manage the Red Devils one day.

Carrick, who has impressed so far as Middlesbrough boss, spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player before joining the coaching staff and working under both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer. The 41-year-old took over at Middlesbrough in October, successfully guiding them into the play-offs.

"Michael is a proper human being, a proper man who you want to be successful,"Solskjaer told The Athletic. "There’s no s*** about him, he does what he does for the right reasons. He’s a winner, a massive winner, yet he stays in control of his emotions.

"He knows what he wants and doesn't lose his rag. He'll never be emotional and fight with the players. I am 100 per cent sure that Michael will be the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be. I cannot see him not being the Manchester United manager."

Latest on De Gea's future

David de Gea has come under fire recently after making another high-profile mistake in United's 1-0 loss to West Ham at the weekend, his fourth error leading to directly to a goal all season.

However, despite suggestions United may let him leave this summer when his current deal expires, the Telegraph report that De Gea has agreed terms on a new deal with a much lower salary than his current £350,000-a-week. It is claimed the contract is waiting to be signed off by the club before an official announcement is made.

The report adds that there is no guarantee De Gea will remain United's No. 1, though, with Ten Hag looking to bring in some real competition for the Spaniard. Dean Henderson is set to return from a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest, while David Raya and Diogo Costa have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Man Utd plot record bid

Mirror Football understands that United are contemplating making a club record bid for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is Ten Hag's top transfer target this summer, but the club are willing to make big money moves for other targets as well as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani battle to buy the club.

And that includes 21-year-old forward Ramos, who is viewed as a hot prospect for the future after scoring 25 goals for Benfica this season. United are set to begin talks over a deal worth between £70m and £100m, including add-ons, which could end up eclipsing their current record transfer of Paul Pogba, who re-joined the club in 2016 for £89.3m.
