Man Utd increasingly confident of appointing Mauricio Pochettino as next manager

Manchester United are increasingly confident of appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new permanent boss this summer.

Former Tottenham boss Pochettino, currently in charge at Paris St Germain, has been wanted by United for several years and finally looks likely to take over at Old Trafford.

Sources in France have suggested PSG have already made the decision to jettison Pochettino at the end of this season, leaving the way clear for United to appoint the 49-year-old.

Although PSG are 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 and in the last 16 of the Champions League, sources in Paris believe a decision has already been made over Pochettino's future.

PSG face Real Madrid in the Champions League and failure to progress to the quarter-finals will seal Pochettino's departure, following his side's shock French Cup exit to Nice on Monday.

Former United chief Ed Woodward was a big fan of Pochettino and it is understood his successor, Richard Arnold, is keen on appointing the Argentine to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag is other name under consideration for the permanent manager's role at United, but Pochettino, who has 18 months left on his PSG contract, is the favoured choice.

Pochettino's experience of the Premier League is said to have given him the edge over Ten Hag in the eyes of the United hierarchy, who know they must get the next managerial appointment right.

As well as having prior Premier League experience with Spurs, Pochettino has a track record of developing young players and playing attractive football, key tenets of any United manager.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013, United have appointed five managers – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now Rangnick.

But United have failed to mount a consistent title challenge under any of them, while the last trophy they won was the Europa League back in 2017 under Mourinho, who was sacked 19 months later.
