Man taken to hospital after van flips over central reservation on A1 near Washington

A man has been taken to hospital after a van flipped over the central reservation of the A1.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after a white van and another vehicle collided on the northbound carriageway between Washington and Chester-le-Street. The van overturned and ended up on the southbound carriageway.

The crash occurred just after 6.45am on Saturday morning. Images from the scene show a number of police cars and ambulances in attendance.

The fire service said they were called to a collision where a vehicle had overturned and a person was trapped. The ambulance service said one patient was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead with minor injuries.

Lanes on the northbound and southbound carriageways have both been closed throughout the morning. Motorists travelling through the area have faced lengthy delays as a result of the collision.

All lanes on both sides of the motorway were reopened to traffic at around 1pm.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they received a 999 call at 6.46am to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision on A1 north between junctions 63 and 64, in which one vehicle ended up on the southbound carriage.

A spokesperson for the NEAS said: "We sent a clinical team leader, emergency ambulance and two Hazardous Area Response Teams. One male patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital with minor injuries."

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the collision at 6.56am. They sent five appliances to the scene and left the area at 7.49am.
