A man was found in the street with a 'head injury' before being taken to hospital this morning.

Merseyside Police rushed to Bridge Road, Prescot, at 6.15am on Sunday over reports that a man had been found injured in the street. When officers arrived they found a man, in his 50s, who had sustained a head injury.

The man has been taken to hospital and parts of Bridge Road and Warrington Road were closed by police as they investigated the incident. A police spokesperson said it was "not clear" how the man sustained the injury.

A neighbour at the scene said they were "woken by sirens" at around 6.30am but had "no idea" there was a police incident happening just outside her front door.

One man who has lived in Prescot for 28 years said: "I got up at half six and went to the toilet and saw flashing blue lights everywhere and my misses went out to have a look.

"No doubt it was something serious judging by the police presence and the ambulances. It's a real shock."

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We have launched an investigation after a man was found in a street in Prescot with a head injury.

"We were contacted at 6.15am today, Sunday 1 st January, by members of the public, after the man, who is in his 50s, was found on Bridge Road.

"The man has been taken to hospital.

"At this stage it is not clear how he came about his injury and CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out in the local area."

Anyone who can assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or contact @CrimestoppersUK on 0800 555 111 quoting log 383 of 1 st January.
