A man has been taken to hospital after being found in the street with a serious head injury.
Police received a call raising concern for the welfare of a man on Wansbeck Road in Ashington, Northumberland. They were contacted just before 6am on Monday morning.
Emergency services attended the scene and a man was found with a serious head injury. Officers say it is consistent with him having been assaulted.

The male is currently receiving treatment in hospital, after being transported there by ambulance.
Northumbria Police has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident and enquires are ongoing.
A spokesperson for the force said: "Just before 6am today (Monday), police received a report of a concern for welfare of a man on Wansbeck Road in Ashington.
"Emergency services attended the scene where a man was found to have a serious head injury consistent with having been assaulted. He has been transported to hospital where he is currently receiving treatment."
