Man slammed for asking sister to pay for his wedding - then uninviting her

Weddings can be incredibly expensive, so it's not unusual for couples to rely on financial help from their families when planning the big day.

One man did exactly that, by turning to his older sister and asking for help paying for his wedding, which she was happy to oblige.

However, the man is now being heavily criticised, after it was revealed he has since uninvited his sister from the celebration altogether - but still expects her to pay,

According to their mum, the siblings - 28-year-old John and Rita, 31, get on fairly well, but aren't particularly close, despite the fact Rita has financially taken care of the family for a number of years.

"Ever since my husband passed away, nearly a decade ago, Rita has stepped up and taken care of all of us financially. She's funded a huge portion of John's life and helped him get a job without debt. She's let me live with her in her house and is very, very soft-spoken and calm," the mum wrote on Reddit's AITA forum.

Her son John recently proposed to his long-term girlfriend Sam, and they've already started making plans for their wedding - making it clear they expect Rita to help them out with it financially, as they're saving up for a house and to later have children.

As Sam has a huge family, they've already taken up a big proportion of the guestlist, and John has been forced to reduce the name of guests on his side, which his mum says is no issue for her or Rita. However, her future daughter-in-law recently discovered that one of her long-lost childhood friends would be in town at the time of wedding, so she wanted to invite her.

However, with the venue already full to capacity, they had to choose one guest to uninvite from the wedding to make room for her, and the couple recently announced that person would be Rita.

"Rita. Sam told John and John told me that she doesn't want Rita to be there cause 'they're not very close' and 'she can always see the couple sometime else'," the mum continued.

"I was rude and questioned her as to why they're removing someone who's helping them out to which the reply was 'I don't like how she's butting in to John's life' and that 'childhood friend is more likeable.' Rita's hurt and told the couple that she won't be paying a dime for the wedding and even went as far as planning a trip on the same dates with her friends."

Her son and his future wife have since been shouting at her, telling her that she's turned Rita "into an egotistic loser," despite the fact his sister has already given them an engagement and wedding gift, prompting the mum to tell him "she's done her part and that childhood friend could cover the expenses."

Since sharing the story online, other Reddit users have been quick to blast John and Sam for being so ungrateful for Rita's efforts.

"Sam is showing your family how controlling she is. Shame on your son for throwing his very generous sister under the bus," one Reddit user commented. "You did right. It’s hard to know when to speak up, but Rita was getting bullied and she, as such a giver, needed your support."

Another agreed: "Your son is very wrong for how he is doing his sister. It is amazing that she was able to step up and help you both out when she didn't have to. It's a huge shame that her brother is doing her this way and treating her like this. She shouldn't have to pay a damn dime towards their wedding, and don't you dare let her. He and his wife are very entitled."
