A person was rescued by a hovercraft after becoming stuck in the mud.
The Hoylake RNLI hovercraft was on a training exercise with Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service and local coastguard units on Crosby Beach on Saturday (August 20) when its crew saw a person waving for help off shore from Crosby Leisure Centre. The hovercraft flew over to the casualty and extracted him from the mud.
He was then taken up the beach and passed to the coastguard and the fire service. The hovercraft returned to the training exercise afterwards.

The RNLI has warned that muddy areas are a feature of the Merseyside coast. People are urged to check the tides, weather and signage if they are heading to the beach.
If people do enter mud or soft sand, they should retrace their steps immediately and take an alternative route. The RNLI has issued the following advice If you get stuck:
- Spread your weight across the surface
- Avoid moving and stay as calm as you can
- Discourage others from trying to rescue you as they may become stuck too
- Dial 999 for the Coastguard. If you don’t have a phone, shout for help
