A man who raped a woman in the woods and attacked a dog walker who tried to intervene has been jailed for 20 years. Kami Gaston, 20, went for a walk with a woman before assaulting her in May 2021 in Hattersley, Greater Manchester.
The attacker also assaulted a concerned woman who approached Gaston when she heard the victim's cries for help, heard the court. Gaston knocked the woman to the floor and stole her phone before threatening her, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The 20-year-old fled the scene with the victim and launched the dog walker's phone in to a nearby bush. After the incident was reported and investigated found Gaston. He was arrested and charged him with one count of rape and a section 47 assault.
He was sentenced to 13 years in prison plus an eight-year extended licence period as Detective Constable Ian Thomson of GMP’s Tameside district told of the bravery of both female victims involved.
He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the victim for her bravery throughout this investigation and for having the courage to report this information.
"I would also like to extend my thanks to the woman who was assaulted after confronting Gaston and helping the victim who bravely intervened and stopped this horrific assault.
“Multiple detectives and officers from Tameside’s Crime Investigation Department dedicated their efforts to ensure that the victim received justice. I hope this conviction goes someway in doing this. Today’s sentencing comes after a long and meticulous investigation. Gaston’s behaviour is completely unacceptable, and I hope this result sends a stark warning to offenders that this behaviour will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester.”
