A man must pay nearly £4,000 after being caught illegally dumping waste across south London.
A probe by the Environment Agency targeting criminals who break into empty sites across London and fill them with waste revealed Martin Ward, 52, had dumped waste in Charlton, Greenwich, Lambeth and Peckham.
Martin Ward, of Crannard Gardens in Newry, Northern Ireland, was fined £2,400 and he was ordered to pay costs of1,500 plus a £48 victims’ surcharge.
He pleaded guilty at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court of knowingly dumping waste illegally at Charlton’s Herringham Way, Greenwich’s Telcon Way, Lambeth’s Pensbury Place and in Bianca Road, Peckham.
The court heard how a Ford Transit tipper linked to Ward was filmed dumping the waste by members of the public and CCTV between October and December 2019.
The convection was part of Operation Angola which has been targeted flytippers in London and the south east.
“Illegally depositing waste at sites without regard for the environment and the law has the potential to harm our natural resources, blight communities and undermine the legitimate businesses that follow the rules,” said Matt Higginson of the Environment Agency.
“Our role is to protect the environment for people and wildlife, so we won’t hesitate to take action against those who put it at risk.
“And to anyone flouting the rules, our message is clear: you won’t get away with it.”
He urged Londoners to check their waste collector is registered as a waste carrier to avoid the waste being illegally dumped.
