As the upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow continues filming, the leaked set pictures keep flooding in, featuring a deep-cut weapon hiding in the background.
The first image, which has since been posted on Reddit, shows David Corenswet suited up as Superman, but it looks like he has just been in a fight of sorts, as the hero has patches of his suit burned, revealing his skin underneath. The rest of the images shed a bit more light on the situation, and it looks like the injuries were caused by none other than Superman baddie Lex Luthor, wearing his green and purple Warsuit, and holding a rather peculiar-looking gun.
However, that gun is rather special. It is the Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun. First introduced in DC Comics in 1962, the Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun was created to harm Superman, targeting his biggest weaknesses with its Green Kryptonite rays. The gun was invented by Lex Luthor, who drew up plans for the weapon in a 1961 comic.
What is most exciting is that this is the first time the gun has appeared on screen. The weapon did appear in the DC animated series Justice League Action, built by Luthor to destroy Superman, but it has never been brought to life in live-action. There was mention of a weapon that could destroy Superman in both Smallville and Superman & Lois, but we never saw the actual Nuclear Kryptonite Ray-Gun with our eyes.
By the looks of the leaked images, it seems as though Nicholas Hoult's DCU villain Luthor could have built the weapon in the upcoming sequel, too, as it echoes the style of his warsuit. However, we don't think the duo will be at odds for long, as the movie will see Luthor and Clark Kent join forces against a new enemy, Braniac. Man of Tomorrow is part of James Gunn's DCU Chapter One, which continues next month with Supergirl.
