Man needs stitches after being hit by bottle before Liverpool v Benfica match

A man needed stitches after reportedly being hit on the head with a bottle before the Liverpool v Benfica match.

Officers received a report around 7pm that several males were involved in an altercation on Oakfield Road, outside the Esso garage in Anfield. It was reported a man received a head injury during the incident, which was reported to have been caused by a bottle being thrown.

A photo shared with the ECHO shows a man with a deep cut to the back of his head which appeared to have been tended to by a medic. Following CCTV enquiries, police located and arrested two men, aged 31 and 30, of no fixed address, on suspicion of affray and Section 20 wounding.

They were taken into custody and questioned by police. They have now been released with no further action taken. Inspector Paul Rannard said: “The area around Anfield stadium would have been very busy last night with fans going to Liverpool’s game against Benfica.

“If you were in the area and witnessed the incident, have any information or captured anything on mobile phone or other devices then please let us know. Whether you let us know directly or anonymously, through Crimestoppers, please come forward.”
