FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A man lost his hand in a fireworks mishap early Saturday morning, officials said.
About 1 a.m., deputies responded to a 911 call in the 440 block of North State Road 7, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
By the time deputies arrived the victim had already been taken to a hospital.
Broward Fire Rescue took the man’s hand to the hospital, and then took the man and his hand to Broward Medical Center.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission [CPSC] said fireworks injuries jumped 25% between 2006 and 2021.
The CPSC said nine people died last year and 11,500 were injured in fireworks-related incidents. Last year’s injuries were down from the 15,000 in 2020, when most public fireworks shows were canceled due to COVID-19, according to the CPSC.
Last year, the CPSC said, 31% of fireworks injuries were to hands and fingers, while 21% were to the head, face and ears.
