A man has opened up about being locked down in a bank after attempting to withdraw £15,000 from his account. Police raced to a HSBC bank in Huddersfield town centre last Friday at around 11.35am over reports of a disturbance involving a male customer.
The bank was shut down and a man was seen being handcuffed and led away by police. Another customer Frankie Palmer, a 22-year-old asset manager, told YorkshireLive what he witnessed when he tried to withdraw his funds.
Frankie, who was not arrested and walked freely out of the bank once the disagreement had ended, said: "At first, I was confused because I was asking to transfer money to a Santander private client and even attempting to simply withdraw it if it made things easier for the bank, however, as the manager came out she instantly had an issue, I could tell from the tone of her voice and her attitude.
"So I simply said 'I'm not leaving the branch until I get the £15,000 HSBC owes me seeing as you've closed also my account' because anyone with a right mind wouldn't just leave money, then that's when she called the police and I began recording on TikTok and FacebookLive.
"To this day, I'm still confused why she had such an attitude, I'm not angry or sad. I'm just confused and want an apology, I've been rethinking if it was something I did that upset her, but I just approached them with a smile and was polite and professional.
"Also, I just want to add that she said to the officers that I was throwing chairs around and smashing things, which is a complete lie as well because you can see on the live stream and their own CCTV as well.
"Finally, when she gave the officer my documents back in the envelope I didn't think to check if everything was there because the cop said everything was but it turns out she's kept my bank card and given me a fake card with a name of Mrs AutoDemo."
He added: "With regards to the outcome I'm hoping for, is my funds to be returned to me in a timely manner and not two months later like they did to a flower shop owner, along with a public apology by the branch manager for being so disrespectful.
West Yorkshire Police say the man left the bank and, after speaking to bank staff, no offences were disclosed to the police.
A spokeswoman for the Force said: "Police were called to a bank on Cloth Hall Street in Huddersfield at 11.33am following a report of a disturbance involving a customer. The male left the premises and on speaking to bank staff, no offences were disclosed to attending officers."
A spokesman for the bank declined to comment on the incident yesterday.
