Man jailed over throat slashing in revenge

A man who took revenge by slashing another's throat over a photo of a woman smoking drugs has been sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars.

Joel Dennis Minor was among three people who confronted a man when he arrived at a southeast Brisbane unit in November 2020, telling him "we set you up, dog".

The man had been lured to the house by a woman, who was angry about a photo he took of her smoking drugs.

He offered to cut ties and never see her again, but the woman said it was "too late" before stabbing him in the shoulder and twisting the blade.

When the man laughed and said he was leaving the Alexandra Hills property, Minor grabbed him from behind.

The 25-year-old sliced the man's throat with a knife, severing his windpipe and jugular vein.

The man was able to leave the apartment and after "some trouble" drove himself to hospital before telling police about the attack a couple of days later, the Brisbane Supreme Court was told.

There had been seething tensions between the man and the woman for some time, with the photo of the woman smoking methamphetamine being the key cause of animosity, prosecutor Steven Dickson said earlier.

"The offending is revenge for what can only be described as petty reasons," he added.

Minor was left extremely angry after suffering domestic violence at a young age from one of his stepfathers, and had been in and out of custody since 13, his barrister Chris Minnery said.

His drug use had exacerbated feelings of hurt, shame and helplessness, and his mother also struggled with drug addiction, the court heard.

While in prison, Minor gave himself extensive facial tattoos "to look fierce so no one else will attack him," Mr Minnery added.

Justice Peter Callaghan on Friday sentenced Minor - who earlier pleaded guilty to one count each of wounding and malicious act with intent - to eight years and six months in jail.
