Man jailed after Paisley siege incident where he threw a fridge and a sofa down stairs to stop cops reaching him

A Paisley man who threw a fridge and sofa down a set of stairs to prevent cops getting to him in a siege incident has been jailed.

Thug Christopher Allan, 31, shouted “Here we go” when cops attended at his Rowan Street home.

After threatening cops and refusing to leave his property, public order officers, negotiators and paramedics were forced to attend the incident on September 18 last year.

Allan appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court via video link from HMP Low Moss and admitted threatening cops, causing damage to two Rowan Street properties and to barricading himself within his home.

Procurator fiscal depute David McDonald told Paisley Sheriff Court that the property where the incident took place is Allan’s home, which he shared with his brother.

Mr McDonald explained: “Police officers were tasked with tracing Allan around 10pm.

“On arrival at his property, they could hear a male voice shouting and swearing, items being thrown around and the accused shouting, ‘Here we go.’

“Officers formed the opinion that it was if the accused was getting ready to fight with them.

“One officer knocked loudly on the door and saw the accused come to the window and they requested he came to the door but he refused and continued shouting and swearing.

“Officers were granted authority to force the door open and at this time the accused began to throw large items including a sofa and a fridge downstairs to barricade the property and prevent the officers from entering.

“The accused was continuing to shout and swear and stated, ‘I do not give a f**k anymore.’

“A siege incident was declared and several other police units attended.”

The court heard out-of-control Allan was then seen to hang out a window, threatening officers stating that if they entered the building, he would “fight them and cut his own throat with a knife.”

Meanwhile, other cops attended at the flat below Allan after the residents saying there was water coming through their ceiling.

Mr McDonald added: “The occupiers of the flat below stated they were being flooded by water that was coming through their roof.

“The fire service attended and switched off the water supply to prevent further damage.

“It was established later that the accused had burst a water pipe.”

The court was told specialist agencies then arrived at the incident including public order officers, negotiators, paramedics, gas engineers, Scottish Power engineers and the fire service.

Mr McDonald explained: “Specialist agencies continued to negotiate with the accused when his mother and grandmother arrived with his brother.

“Allan was still shouting and swearing and threw items, smashing a window at the property.

“He then spoke with officers and they told him to make his way outside.

“Allan refused, stating he didn’t trust police and stated he had previously been assaulted by police officers.

“Family members were able to convince the accused to leave the building, and shortly before half past midnight, he exited by a front window using a ladder the fire service provided.

“Officers took hold of him, handcuffed him and took him to the station where he was held in custody.”

Defence agent Anthony Callaghan told how Allan had “been offending since he was a young man.”

Mr Callaghan added: “He has suffered from a conduct disorder from childhood and this substantially impacts his ability to control is behaviour.

“On this day he had been drinking, and earlier that day he had been assaulted.

“When the police attended to speak with him, he had reacted in this way.”

Sheriff Tom McCartney jailed Allan for a total of nine months.
