Man in hospital as police investigate suspected explosion inside car in South Belfast

A man is in hospital with facial injuries following a suspected explosion in a car in South Belfast last night (Friday). Police have shut down roads in the Newton Park area and have issued a security alert to the public urging them to stay away.

Ammunition Technical Officers are currently in attendance and the area concerned will remain closed overnight with cordons in place. Ballymaconaghy Road, Manse Road and Cairnshill Road have all been shut down following the incident, officers confirmed.

A statement from police reads: "Police are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Newton Park area of south Belfast. It is believed at this time that there was an explosion within a car.

"One man was taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries. Ammunition Technical Officers are currently in attendance.

"The Newton Park area will remain closed overnight. Cordons are currently in place and a number of homes have been evacuated. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

"Other roads closed include the Ballymaconaghy Road, Manse Road and Cairnshill Road. There are no further details at this time.

"Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference number 2055 19/08/22.
