Man in hospital and residents evacuated after early morning Glasgow tenement fire

A man has been rushed to a Glasgow hospital after a fire ripped through a tenement building in the early hours of this morning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to Garthland Drive, Dennistoun at around 3am this morning, where they remain battling the blaze which is believed to have broken out in a ground floor flat.

Residents in the area have been evacuated as a safety precaution and one 50-year-old man was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where his condition is described as stable.

At one point nine fire engines were in use to put out the flames, with video footage shared online showing multiple ambulances and police vehicles at the scene, reports the Daily Record.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "At 3am on Thursday, December 29, police were called to a report of a fire at a block of flats in Garthland Drive, Dennistoun, Glasgow. A number of residents were evacuated as a result of the fire.

"A 50-year-old man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where hospital staff describe his condition as stable. Officers are working with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire."

A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "Operations control immediately mobilised a nine fire appliances to the location at 2.43am this morning. Firefighters were made aware of a large-scale fire from within a tenement block at Garthland Drive in Glasgow.

"Tenants were removed from properties. Crews remain at the scene as they work to extinguish the fire."
