Police and paramedics were called to the parade of shops on Hankinson Way on Tuesday night. The victim was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. His conditions is not thought to be life-threatening.

Multiple accounts from eyewitnesses said the man was attacked outside the Lloyds Bank on Hankinson Way in the city. Photos showed a police presence and part of the precinct was taped off.

Other photos sent to the M.E.N., which we are choosing not to publish, show paramedics in attendance, treating a man for an injury before he was taken to an ambulance.

One passer-by has told the M.E.N. that the incident was 'an unprovoked attack'. "I’m a nurse and just helped passing by," the woman, who has asked to stay anonymous, said.
