A man aged in his 30s has died in a collision with a HGV on the M61 motorway, police have sadly confirmed.
The northbound and southbound lanes of the motorway from Horwich, Bolton, to Chorley in Lancashire, were closed for several hours on Friday evening for accident investigation work, with diversions put in place and long delays reported.
Police have now confirmed officers were called to 'reports of a collision between a HGV and a pedestrian in the carriageway' at around 3.45pm.
The man, who hasn't been named, was aged in his 30s, Lancashire Police said. He is said to have died at the scene. Police said on Saturday his family were being supported by specially trained officers.
The collision is said to have occurred on the northbound carriageway near Chorley.
In a statement, Lancashire Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a man died in a collision on the M61. We were called to the northbound carriageway of the M61 near to Chorley at around 3.45pm yesterday, Friday, after reports of a collision between a HGV and a pedestrian in the carriageway.
"The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, sadly died at the scene. His family are being supported by specially trained officers. Any witnesses should contact 101, quoting the log number 0786 of 14th October or email sciu@lancashire.police.uk
"There were a number of a vehicles in the area at the time and we are appealing for anybody who saw the incident to contact us."
National Highways confirmed a full closure was put in place over rush-hour between junction six for the A6027 at De Havilland Way in Horwich, Bolton, and junction six for the A674 at Millennium Way, Chorley.
Reports suggested the incident also affected routes through nearby towns including Adlington, Blackrod, Heath Charnock and Chorley.
