A man in his 30s has died after he was hit by a police car on an emergency call in south London.

The pedestrian was struck by a marked vehicle at just after 12.30am on Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Police said he had been given emergency first aid by officers.

London Ambulance Service paramedics treated him, but he died at the scene.

His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, the force said.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have also been informed.

An IOPC spokesman said: “We’ve begun an independent investigation into a fatal road traffic collision involving a Met Police vehicle overnight.

“We understand that the driver of a police vehicle has collided with a member of the public, who sadly died, on Borough High Street, Southwark, at around 12.30am.

“We were notified by the force and declared an independent investigation at around 4.20am.

“We have sent investigators to attend the scene and the police post incident procedure, to begin gathering evidence.”

Cordons were in place around Borough High Street and local traffic was being disrupted but the road has since reopened.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.34am today (7 January) to reports of a road traffic collision on Borough High Street, SE1.

“We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance.

“Our first paramedic arrived on scene in less than four minutes.

“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a patient was pronounced dead at the scene.”
