Man in his 20s has died, while the Mitchell Highway near Orange remains closed

Two men remain in a stable condition in Orange Hospital.  (ABC Central West: Hamish Cole)

A man in his 20s has died in a four-vehicle crash which occurred after a police pursuit in the New South Wales Central West this morning.

Emergency services were called to the accident on the Mitchell Highway near Orange, where three vehicles and a bus had collided.

The 23-year old male driver of one of the cars died at the scene, while two occupants of one of the other vehicles were taken to Orange Hospital in a stable condition.

Police say one of the vehicles involved in the accident had been reported stolen at nearby Blayney last Thursday.

They say police officers noticed the car this morning and commenced a  pursuit which was called off shortly before the accident occurred, due to the weather conditions and the manner of driving.

The Mitchell Highway remains closed in both directions, and is expected to remain that way for some time due to the police investigation.

Eastbound motorists should use William Street and Northern Distributor Road.
