A MAN has died after the car he was driving lost control and smashed into a petrol pump in the Newcastle area on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency crews were called to a petrol station on Maitland Road at Mayfield about 4.30pm after reports a Toyota Camry had crashed into a pump when the driver was trying to leave the service station.
The driver - a man police believed to be in his 80s - was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and was taken to Calvary Mater Hospital, where he later died.
The identity of the man had not been made public at the time of publication.
Newcastle City Police District said in a statement on Tuesday night that an investigation had been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A NSW Police Media spokesperson could not confirm the exact location of the incident when contacted by the Newcastle Herald on Wednesday morning, but it is understood the crash occurred at BP.
The spokesperson could also not say whether a possible medical episode formed part of the investigation.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
