A MAN has been rushed to hospital following a horror crash on a major motorway.
The collision happened on the westbound carriageway of the M8 between junctions 7A and 8 near Shawhead, at around 5.20am on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
Emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours, causing significant delays during the morning commute.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are in attendance following a road crash on the M8 westbound near Shawhead, which was reported at 5.20am this morning.
"Junction 7A is closed.
"Please follow diversions or take an alternative route."
The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that a man in his 50s was taken to hospital.
A spokesman said: "We received a call at 0612 hours today to attend a road traffic collision on the M8. We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and transported one male patient in his 50s to Wishaw General Hospital."
The westbound carriageway was closed between junctions 7A and 8 for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene.
Traffic Scotland warned drivers of growing tailbacks and advised motorists to take care on approach.
At 7am, travel times were estimated at around 10 minutes, but by 7.50am, delays had increased to 25 minutes as congestion built up on surrounding routes.
The A725 also became heavily congested in both directions as a result of the closure.
The road was fully reopened by 9.20am, but long delays continued for some time afterwards.
By 9.37am, the road was "now running clear."
The full circumstances of the crash are not yet known, and the man's condition has not been revealed.
