Fatal shooting of mum Sandra Boyd in Finglas second tragedy to hit family this year

Gardai have arrested a man who was well-known to gun victim Sandra Boyd on suspicion of her murder.

The 27-year-old was lifted in Dublin yesterday after investigators were trying to locate him since Saturday night’s killing.

It’s understood he had presented himself to St James’s Hospital for treatment on Sunday.

Mum-of-five Sandra, 36, was shot once in the chest at the rear of her parents’ home, where there was a gathering with a number of people present, in Collins Place, Finglas, West Dublin.

Investigators are trying to establish if the suspected gunman had the firearm and Sandra was shot accidentally in the process of disarming him.

Sandra was later pronounced dead at the Mater Hospital.

Cops confirmed a man was being quizzed at Finglas Garda Station on suspicion of murder.

He is being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, meaning gardai can question him for up to seven days before the Director of Public Prosecutions will have to decide whether to charge or release him.

The Irish Mirror has learned that this is the second tragedy to rock the family since New Year’s Day.

Sandra’s cousin Josh Boyd, 19, was killed on January 1 after the bike he was riding struck a lamp post while travelling on Sillogue Road in Ballymun, Dublin.

A local source said: “Sandra and Josh were cousins.

“It’s just a very tragic and sad few months for all the family and relations.”

The major probe into Sandra’s murder is continuing as gardai try to establish what happened.

They are also awaiting results from the ballistics examination carried out on a handgun recovered at the scene of the house.

This will confirm if this firearm was the one used to kill Sandra and experts may also recover DNA
from it.

The shooting is not linked to any gangland feud, nor was tragic Sandra involved in any criminality.

Yesterday a Garda presence remained outside the house where she was shot and flowers were laid at the scene by heartbroken friends.

Tributes continued to pour in for the mum of four boys and an 18-month-old girl yesterday.

Sandra’s sister Mandy said: “I have no words to describe the pain I am feeling. My heart is absolutely broken.

“My beautiful sister Sandra I love u so much.” The sister of Sandra’s partner Darren Noonan, Aoife, wrote: “I can not believe that I am writing this, it still doesn’t feel real to me.

“Sandra Boyd you were truly one of a kind, the kindest person I knew always made everyone feel welcome, you deserve the best bed in heaven.

“You were the best mammy to your boys and baby girl Darcy.

“Look after your family and my brother and give them the strength to get through this.” Detectives have urged anyone with information to contact investigating officers.

A spokesman said: “We are also appealing for any person driving in the area of Collins Park, Ballygall Road West or any adjacent/ surrounding roads between 8pm and 9pm, particularly drivers of any vehicle or other roads users who may have video footage to contact investigating gardai.”

  • Cops can be contacted at Finglas Garda station 01 666 7500, the Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
