Northumbria Police has confirmed his death is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 6.45pm yesterday we received a report from paramedics of a sudden death underneath the High Level Bridge.
“It was reported a man had been found unresponsive and was declared deceased at the scene. We do not believe there to be any third party involvement.
“His next of kin have been notified and are being supported by officers at this time.”
One passer-by said a wooded area between the High Level Bridge and the Swing Bridge was cordoned off with police tape last night.
