A man has faced court after being charged over the sexual assault of an 11-year-old child in North Melbourne.
Salmanul Abdullah, 31, did not apply for bail when he appeared by video link from custody in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.
He is facing three charges, including rape and contravening his bail conditions, court documents revealed.
Abdullah, who was dressed in a white jumpsuit, remained silent for the brief hearing.
The court heard he had substance abuse issues and was a refugee, which made him vulnerable while in custody.
He was remanded to appear in court on October 20 for a committal mention.
The 11-year-old girl was assaulted at Boundary Road near Racecourse Road just before 2pm on Thursday, police said earlier.
Paramedics were called and she was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
