A 43-year-old man has drowned while diving with friends in waters off Tasmania's King Island.

Police and emergency services were called to Johnson Rock at Currie on the island's west coast, shortly before 11.30am on Sunday.

Personnel were told a diver had encountered difficulties in the water, during what police believe was a free diving session.

The 43-year-old man who was visiting Tasmania from interstate was retrieved from the water and his friends attempted CPR.

He could not be revived and died at the scene.

He is at least the 43rd person to drown in Australia this summer which is five more people than at the the same time in 2023.

King Island sits in the Bass Strait off the northwest tip of Tasmania and has several dive sites and wrecks.
