Man Dies In Queensland Floodwaters As Heavy Rainfall Continues To Lash The State

One person has died in Queensland floodwaters, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warning residents that heavy rainfall could continue to trigger flash flooding in central and northern parts of the state.

On Tuesday, at about 3pm, police were called to Normanton’s Gulf Development Road in north-west Queensland, where they found a car submerged in floodwaters, 9News reports.

The body of a man aged in his 70s was found inside. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The tragic death comes after the state’s north-west was lashed with rainfall totals of up to 150mm.

Although severe weather conditions are expected to ease today, BoM have warned that heavy rainfall and storms are still possible over central and northern Queensland.

Per ABC News, Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) have been activated for five councils following the severe weather conditions.

The Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Flinders, McKinlay, and Richmond shire councils can access the funding, which will support local government responses in clean-up, recovery, emergency roadworks, and repairs.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said authorities are prepared for these conditions, ensuring that towns affected by road closures have sufficient supplies.

“We pre-positioned a lot of fuel supplies to those isolated communities that live and die on generators,” Crisafulli said.

“There are a number of key locations where avgas [aviation fuel] has been provided ahead of time.”

ABC News reports almost 50 roads have been cut off across the state due to high priority alerts for flash flooding and long-term flooding, with more roads closed or partially closed due to flooding.

Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said that more road closures could be implemented depending on the weather.

“We are expecting king tides later in the week, so there may be periods of inundation,” Mickelberg warned.

People are urged to stay up to date with weather warnings through the BoM website and the Queensland government’s disaster website.
