Man dies during traffic stop in Colorado

DENVER — A man died Saturday during a traffic stop after being tased by a Larimer County sheriff’s deputy and struck by a passing vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Larimer County sheriff’s deputies stopped a driver traveling on Interstate 25 at 9:15 p.m. Saturday for expired registration. The driver exited the interstate and stopped his car near the Mountain Vista exit, according to a news release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies asked the man to step out of the car after they determined that the man gave them a fake name. The man then fled and ran toward the interstate, according to the news release.

A deputy used a Taser on the man, who was then struck by a passing vehicle, the news release states.

The man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The news release did not name the man and the coroner’s office will release his identity at a later date.

The man’s death is being investigated by the Fort Collins Police Department and the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
