A man has died after he was stabbed during an altercation in Melbourne's southeastern suburbs.
Emergency services were called to St Kilda beach just after 7.30pm on Sunday following reports of people fighting.
One 18-year-old man was found with stab wounds on the beach near Pier Road.
The Tarneit man was taken to hospital where he later died.
Detective Acting Inspector for the homicide squad, Nigel L'Estrange, said about five or six males were seen fighting, armed with multiple knives, and called for witnesses to come forward.
"There is a number of CCTV cameras in the area, so these people will be identified," he told reporters.
"It's a horrible incident to be done in public and I just want to assure the public that Melbourne is a safe place, we do have a number of police we'll be adding at beach locations and holiday slots over the summer."
Detectives are investigating, with charges yet to be laid.
