A man has died after crashing his electric unicycle on a Melbourne trail.

The 35-year-old from Heidelberg Heights in the city's northeast was riding along the Darebin Creek Trail near Wimpole Crescent at Bellfield about 5pm on Tuesday.

Victoria Police believe he may have been speeding when he crossed onto the wrong side of the trail before losing control while trying to avoid two cyclists.

The rider was ejected from the unicycle before he crashed into a guard rail, police said.

He died at the scene.

Police urged anyone with information or footage of the crash to come forward.

The Darebin Creek Trail path runs from Kew to Bundoora and is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists.
