A man has sadly died after a BMW crashed on the M6 motorway then caught fire, police have revealed today.
The Manchester Evening News reported last week the man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the car collided with the central reservation. Firefighters also confirmed they were called to extinguish a subsequent fire in the boot of the car.
An air ambulance and other emergency services were scrambled to the scene at around 5.10pm on February 14, near junction 26, heading northbound around Orrell, near Wigan.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Monday the driver of the BMW sadly died shortly after arriving at hospital, reports the Liverpool Echo. A coroner has been notified ahead of an inquest opening.
Emergency services including police, fire, ambulance and National Highways arrived at the scene shortly after the collision and found the BMW had crashed into the motorway's central reservation.
The motorway was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene. An air ambulance from Manchester landed a short time later before flying back to base.
The fire service said crews tackled a fire in the boot of the car before leaving the scene 45 minutes later. Police later confirmed the man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
And now a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the man died shortly after arriving in hospital.
The spokesperson said: "An officer from our serious collision unit has confirmed that police attended the incident on the M6 and the man who was taken to hospital with serious injuries sadly passed away shortly after in hospital.
"His death has been reported to HM coroner.
"There is no criminal investigation linked to this incident. Next of kin have been made aware and the man has been formally identified."
