A man has died after being struck by a train in the early hours of yesterday on the rail line between Edinburgh and Newcastle.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Cramlington station in Northumberland at around 2am on Saturday April 8 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
Tragically a man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed.
Transport cops have launched an investigation into the death which caused major disruption on the railway network. Authorities were forced to shut the Edinburgh to Newcastle line for several hours to allow them to conduct their enquiries.
The route has since re-opened.
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "British Transport Police were called to the railway tracks near Cramlington station around 2 am on the 8th of April following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The man's family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. The incident is under investigation."
