Man City have apologised to Liverpool Football Club and condemned their own fans for their actions during a minute’s silence in memory of the 97 fans who were unlawfully killed at Hillsborough.
With the 33rd anniversary of the disaster falling on Friday, a minute’s silence was held ahead of kick-off at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Man City to remember the Reds fans who lost their lives on April 15, 1989.
But while the Liverpool end of the stadium impeccably observed the silences, fans in the Man City end broke into a pro-City chant, resulting in Reds fans inside Wembley to start booing after their urges for silence were ignored.
And following the incident, City released an official statement apologising to Liverpool.
“Manchester City are extremely disappointed with the actions of some City supporters during the minute’s silence before today’s game,” they said. “The Club sincerely apologises to all those connected with Liverpool Football Club.”
