Man City handed transfer boost after Tottenham Hotspur decision as Declan Rice alternative named

Here are your Manchester City headlines for Monday, July 3.

Summer budget boosted by Spurs Porro transfer

Manchester City's summer transfer budget has been boosted by £10m after Tottenham permanently signed their former defender Pedro Porro.

Porro moved from Sporting to Spurs in January on an initial loan deal, with the obligation to make the move permanent in the summer. The Spanish international impressed in his six months at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has now completed his move for €40m.

That fee gives City a transfer boost as they held a sell-on clause when selling Porro to Sporting in 2022 for £7.2m, worth 30 per cent of any profit Sporting made.

City icon names Rice transfer alternative

City icon Rodney Marsh believes the club would be signing someone 'cheaper and better' than West Ham midfielder Declan Rice should they swoop for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.

Ikay Gundogan has left the Etihad Stadium upon the expiry of his contract and has moved to Spanish giants Barcelona. However, that gap in the squad appears to have been plugged by the arrival of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea for a £30m fee.

However, City appear to still be on the hunt for central midfield reinforcements. The club were interested with a move for West Ham United skipper Declan Rice, but walked away from any deal after a £90m deal was turned down by the London side.

You can read why Marsh feels City should sign De Jong over Rice here.
